During the main works contract at Highbury N5 1RA, the Highbury Corner Bridge was demolished and reconstructed as a part of the planned modernisation scheme.

J Coffey Infrastructure were awarded the reinforcement & concrete subcontract works package to include the replacement and refurbishment of an existing road over rail bridge across the route network at Highbury Corner, Islington.
Major interfaces to the contracted works consisted of A1 Holloway Road users, Highbury Station users, pedestrians, local residents & businesses.
To keep the A1 operational at all times, works were undertaken in different stages.

This package of works was successfully completed and handed over ahead of the programme milestones.

The associated works were undertaken in ‘live’ traffic environment, challenging logistics and rail environment in compliance with the Project Section 61, that included:

  • Bridge deck construction
  • Reinforced concrete works
  • Highway/carriageway works
  • Excavation and temporary works
  • Planning of existing surfacing
  • Installation of carriageway drainage, kerbs, edgings, paving, services, sub-base and asphalt surfacing
  • Protection works to rail tracks and TfL assets
  • Waterproofings works
  • Road markings & signage
